How does a person decide to start a petting zoo? When Purdy’s Petting Zoo owner, Mark Purdy, decided to buy some land for his family to have “fun” on he had no idea the fun would lead to an opportunity for all.

Mark and his family began with a few calfs. His Daughter, Darrah, wanted a pig and made a deal with her dad that if she was in a beauty pageant she could get a pig. The day  came and Darrah won the pageant. This in her mind entitled her to two pigs. Some how after this day Darrah and her brother Landon ended up with four pigs. Two for each child. Those four pigs quickly turned into 29 pigs. It did not take the Purdy’s long to decide the pig business may not be for them! However, as the pigs were sold Mark decided to get a few goats, and each month he would decide to get 1 or 2 other animals of interest. This lead to a growing love for the Purdy family. Mark and Landon began to research and learn about animals they thought their family would like to have around.

In 2008 Mark and Melissa Purdy gave their son, Landon, a petting zoo birthday party at their farm. The children and adults that attended the party had such a great time that the Purdy’s decided they would start a new adventure for their family. This was not only a new business adventure, but also away for the family to bond in the outdoors. As the family started Purdy’s Petting Zoo they realized a petting zoo requires a lot of patience, love and some magic. Petting zoos are all about getting people closer to animals and nature. There is nothing Mark and Melissa like more then to see their children and other children smile, and that is exactly what the petting zoo seems to do!

Melissa was very excited about her family’s new business. She loves to entertain and celebrate birthdays, and now she has the opportunity to help others make wonderful birthday memories. The Purdy’s strive to make birthday parties hassle free for the host families. The birthday child is treated like a star, and he and his guest are entertained. Entertainment at birthday parties includes visiting the petting zoo, pony rides, gem mining, stocked small pond fishing and a trailer ride. Melissa also directs the party, serves the food, cleans up, and helps you unload and load your car. The family strives to make sure a party at Purdy’s Petting Zoo is one a child will remember forever!

As the birthday party idea became a hit people began to want to come visit the Purdy farm. This lead to Mark deciding he would open the petting zoo daily so that all could enjoy. During open seasons you can find the Purdy family at their petting zoo Wednesday through Sunday waiting to give their customers a great experience. During this experience guest can choose to go through the petting zoo and feed the exotic animals, gem mine, hop on a pony for a ride, or fish in a stocked pond. The family is working on adding ZIPLINES to the list of family fun!

Melissa and Mark made field trips an option for schools in fall of 2008. Melissa, a teacher for 10 years, works to ensure that the field trips are not only fun but also organized and educational. This is to help the students and teachers have a more enjoyable time.

Purdy’s Petting Zoo not only provides the activities listed above, but the family also provides a summer farm camp for children in grades kindergarten through 5th grade. During the camp the campers get to do all the regular petting zoo activities like pet, feed, and water the animals, fish, gem mine, and pony rides but the campers also get the opportunity to create projects, milk a cow, gather fresh eggs, work a garden, tend to the Petting Zoo Animals, learn animal handling care and facts, play outdoor games, have a hayride, learn to read recipes, cook, prepare fresh vegetables, can food, make butter, and much more. Farm camp is a loving Christian environment for any child!

With all of this said you may still be asking the question, “What animals will we see if we visit the petting zoo?” If you visit Purdy’s Petting Zoo you will have the opportunity to see :
